Biography

Barry Greenstein is an American professional poker player from Chicago, Illinois. He is widely recognized as The Robin Hood of Poker for donating big parts of his poker winnings to charity. Greenstein has three World Series of Poker bracelets in his trophy collection as well as two World Poker Tour titles.

Intro

Barry is a very professional player and never seems to lose his cool at the table, even if he does lose the occasional $1 million pot on an episode of High Stakes Poker. Maybe not the most intimidating player at the table, Greenstein employs a calculated and very analytical approach to that game that makes him a feared force by the other members of any table he sits down at.

Background

Barry Greenstein was born in Chicago, Illinois and exposed to cards by his father while he was growing up. Although Barry found love for the games of gin rummy and hearts, it was poker that provided him with a way to earn some extra income while growing up. After graduating high school, he earned a computer science degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign before going on to study for a mathematics Ph.D. Greenstein never did fully complete his Ph.D. studies. Instead, he relocated to California and began working for a company called Symantec. By the age of 36, Barry realized he could give up his day job and focus on poker full time.

Working hard and putting in long hours on the felt allowed Barry to make huge strides with poker, but it wasnt until 2003 that he really won something big. In March of that year, Greenstein took first place in Larry Flynts Poker Challenge Cup for an enormous payday of $1 million. After winning the tournament, he decided to take a large chunk of the money and make a donation to a charity. Greenstein did just that, giving a large percentage of his winnings to charity. This is where his nickname The Robin Hood of Poker stemmed from. Still to this day, Greenstein uses his tournament winnings to donate to various charities and do his part.

World Series of Poker

In 2004 Greenstein captured his first WSOP bracelet in the No-Limit Deuce-to-Seven Lowball event for almost $300,000 in prize money. One year later he scred a second one by winning the $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha event for more than $120,000. His third WSOP trophy came in 2008 when Greenstein took down the $1,500 Seven Card Razz tournament taking home almost $160,000 in cash.

European Poker Tour

With three WSOP bracelets and two WPT titles Greenstein only has the European circuit to conquer in order to put the poker's Triple Crown on his head. Although he has one first-place finish in an EPT tournament, it wasn't the one that would name him the EPT champion. In 2008 Greenstein won the 10,000 Stars of Poker event at the EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo for a 50,000 payday.

Other Achievements

In 2003 Greenstein won the $125,000 Million Dollar Seven Card Stud Tournament at the Larry Flynt's Poker Challenge Cup in Gardena and took home a cash prize of $770,000. Then a year later he took down the $2,500 No-Limit Hold'em tournament at the Bellagio Five-Star World Poker Classic for 215,969 in prize money. Barry is also a staple in the Big Game at the Bellagio with the likes of the late Chip Reese, Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey, and Chau Giang.

Did you know?

  • Doyle Brunson respects talent when he sees it and sought Greenstein out to write a chapter in Super/System 2.
  • Greenstein also authored his own book called Ace on the River, which hell happily give you an autographed copy of if you bust him out of a tournament.

WPT Global Poker Games

1. What is a flight tournament?

A flight tournament has multiple qualifiers (or Day 1s), and the top X% (usually 10-20%) of each flight advance to the final day. When a flight reaches that percentage, it ends automatically, and the remaining players move to the final day (chips are carried over). Flights may also end based on level, time, or remaining players. Some flights may not award prizes, while others do. After all flights end, the final day starts as scheduled. You must buy in for each flight; direct entry to the final day is not allowed. You can enter multiple flights in the same tournament, but only your largest chip stack carries over if you qualify more than once.

2. What is a satellite tournament?

A satellite tournament is a tournament where you can win entry to a major tournament for a small buy-in. The entry fee is usually 10-20% of the major tournament. Multiple entries may be awarded depending on the number of participants. Example: In an $11 ($10+$1) satellite, one ticket to a $110 ($100+$10) tournament is awarded for every 11 players. Some satellites award generic tickets that can be used for any tournament with the same buy-in, not just a specific tournament.

3. What is a guaranteed tournament?

A guaranteed tournament is a tournament where a certain prize pool is guaranteed regardless of the number of players. If there are more players, the prize pool increases, but it will not fall below the guaranteed minimum. Example: In a $55 ($50+$5) tournament with a $2,000 guarantee, even with 22 players, $2,000 is paid out. With 63 players, $3,150 (63×$50) is paid out.

4. How do I use tournament tickets in my backpack?

Fairness and Security

1. What is WPT Global's fairness algorithm?

Our fairness algorithm is designed to ensure that all players have an equal chance of winning and to enhance the player experience. By limiting the number of skilled players at each table, we provide new players with a fair chance of winning. You will never be seated with eight pros at the same table and will mainly play against others of similar skill. Even for pros, limiting the number of other pros provides a better experience. Whether you are a new, recreational, or professional player, you will find your preferred game in one of the largest cash game player pools.

2. How does WPT Global ensure safety and reliability?

Our team consists of over 50 industry experts and former professional poker players. We use AI detection tools to monitor for bots, RTAs, collusion, and multi-accounting 24/7/365. Every security case is reviewed independently by at least two team members to ensure accurate and objective conclusions.
